Beijing Pensioner Signs Will; Gives 10% of Assets to Dog, 0% to Kids

China recently introduced its first service that provides free processing of wills for citizens over 60, with the Beijing office proving so popular that appointments have already been fully booked into next year.

A judge from the People’s Court however stated that many pensioners weren’t willing to set up wills as they were afraid of creating conflict and dissatisfaction between various family members. One will certainly took the judge by surprise however: a widowed elderly man demanded that some of his property assets go to his own former nanny after he dies and 10% to his pet dog “Xiao Dou”.

The will also stated that none of his assets were to be given to his son or daughter. “They’re disrespectful. I never received any respect or filial piety from them when they grew up,” said the man. The judge subsequently took into account his needs with regard to the will, and processed it accordingly.
