China to Accept Foreign Vaccine Certificates from Some Visa Applicants

At long last, China has started recognizing some foreign Covid-19 vaccinations from people seeking to enter the country. Would-be visitors who have been inoculated in the US with either the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson jabs can now submit evidence of their status with the documents required for processing their visas.

The big news, released by the Chinese embassy in Washington, suggests the beginning of the easing of travel restrictions between China and America.  The Chinese embassy in Iraq is also accepting any Covid-19 vaccination approved for use in Iraq, including China’s Sinopharm and the UK’s AstraZeneca. Similar cooperation with other countries is expected to follow.

Up until this point, China was only allowing entry to foreigners from certain countries who had been inoculated with a Chinese vaccine. The move was, however criticized as a bid to force the countries who hadn’t recognized China’s vaccines to do so.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that China is planning to authorize the Pfizer vaccine for use in China by July. That would make it the first non-Chinese vaccine to receive Beijing’s backing. Foshun Pharma, the Chinese partner of Pfizer’s maker BioNTech, has sole marketing rights in Greater China.

Last month, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing would hold talks with other countries to achieve mutual recognition of digital health certificates, which would include information on vaccinations.
