Founded in 1902, today it is the largest university library in Asia, and is well-known as a leading research library. As of 2005, the library boasted 6 million pieces in its collections including 1.5 million books. Peking University Library houses some of the most important ancient Chinese books, and an additional 200,000 volumes dating from the 5th - 18th centuries. Its collections of foreign books and of pre-Revolutinary materials are among the largest in China. The library is a member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the China Library Association, and the China Science Information Association.
