Task 2:

What do I need to know about ovulation? (And why is ovulation so important?)
Don’t worry if you feel like you’re a complete ‘ovulation-novice’. Here are the main things you need to know.

In a nutshell, ovulation is when one of your ovaries releases an egg and it begins its journey down the fallopian tubes to your uterus. It’s a bit too simple to think of ovulation as ‘just’ the release though.
You will have probably been told that ovulation takes place half way through your cycle. Although this is possible, it’s also different for everyone. You might ovulate on day 14, but you might ovulate on day 10 or day 21, it just depends on your unique cycle!

What causes ovulation to happen?
During the first phase of your cycle, the follicular phase, your body begins preparing for ovulation by increasing a hormone called Follicle Stimulating Hormone (or FSH for short) that makes your eggs grow. One egg or follicle, emerges as the dominant one and just before ovulation, Luteinizing Hormone (or LH for short) surges and this triggers the release of this ‘ripest egg’. Estrogen levels will rise whilst the eggs are growing, and then surge and peak alongside LH, which tends to peak in the 24-36 hours before ovulation.

The fertile window and ovulation
The fertile window is the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. These are the 6 days that sex can result in pregnancy.
For this reason, we focus on helping you predict the fertile window and your ovulation. Our predictions are based on the data you provide when logging.
When predicting ovulation, the most helpful things to log are cervical mucus, BBT, cramping, cervical position, an increase in sex drive and, if you want to use them, results from your ovulation predictor kits (LH test strips) and fern tests. Other data will be helpful too; it may turn out to be an ovulation symptom that’s specific to you. For example, some people find they get extra hungry or tired around the time of ovulation.

Signs of irregular ovulation
Irregular or missing periods can be a sign of ovulation problems
No rise in BBT
Ongoing high or peak levels shown in LH tests
If you’re seeing these signs, or you’re concerned that you’re not ovulating, it’s always good to speak to your doctor to find out what’s going on.
