To keep the streets of Shanghai safe, the city’s authorities have taken a leaf out of Hong Kong’s safety instruction manual so to speak, and introduced Emergency Mobile Police. Hong Kong’s version, the Police Tactical Unit (PTU), has seen success in reducing public crimes.
The duties of the new law enforcement branch include patrolling the streets, being ready to respond to calls for help from civilians in all parts of the city, rapidly dispatching armed men to a crime scene, being a public presence to deter criminals and to reduce petty crimes. The Pudong, Huangpu, Hongkou and Minhang districts have all signed up for the service.
