In an unexpected move that has surely upset propaganda officials across the country, the new movie “Young Lei Feng” has been pulled from cinemas in many Chinese cities after no one bought a ticket to see it, despite it being the media-hyped “Learn from Lei Feng Day” (学雷锋日.) For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Lei Feng was a PLA soldier in the late fifties and early sixties who apparently performed an incredible amount of selfless deeds, all in the spirit of communism. He has been since used as an idol for promoting communist values, with the “Young Lei Feng” being one of three films about the revolutionary superhero; the others being “Lei Feng in 1959” and “Lei Feng’s Smile.”
