A woman in Guangdong has been arrested and sentenced to five years in jail for belonging to the illegal religious sect, ‘The Church of the Almighty God’; the religious group which gained worldwide notoriety this weekend over the McDonalds killing.
The entire world was shaken this weekend, as members of the Almighty God sect viciously beat a woman to death for refusing to give them her phone number. Debates have raged ever since, over the inaction of the witnesses and the lack of police response, and the government is now cracking down on the cult in light of the horrific incident.
Huang Mingfei, 39, joined the organization in 2010 and has been organizing meetings and supplying materials to fellow members ever since. The Shaoguan intermediate court found Huang, who has only received a primary school education, guilty of ‘organizing and using a religious cult to break laws’.
The ‘Almighty God’ sect was founded in 1989 in Heilongjiang province by Zhao Weishan and is based on loosely interpreted bible passages. The religion has been illegal in China since 1995.
