China Announces Scrapping of Prisoner Organ Harvesting on New Year’s Day

Xinhua news made a broadcast today officially announcing the end of using executed prisoners as organ ‘donors’.

The new policy came into effect on January 1, and the country will now rely on voluntary donations and family members as a source for organs.

The announcement came last month after years of petitioning and international pressure, although many are viewing the change of policy with cynicism

Although the move has been welcomed by human rights organizations both domestically and abroad, demand for organs severely outstrips supply, with an average of 300,000 people waitlisted for treatment, per year.

The issue of organ donation is tricky in China, as traditional beliefs that the body should be buried or cremated intact are still prevalent. China has a worryingly low donation rate with only 6 out of 100,000 willing to donate organs after death.

There are also concerns that the new deficit will increase the black market trade of organs, which is already highly prevalent.

Honestly I think that was a good idea. But China's justice system is too flawed so many innocent people are put to death and jailed.
