When Soraya Heydari graduated from university she wanted to travel but didn’t have the means to do so. So she took a job as an aupair/English teacher with a family in Hangzhou. On her arrival, all of her preconceived notions of ‘communist China’ were smashed by what she found. The family she was to live with for the next year was rich. Super, filthy, disgustingly rich! The family has 5 porches, the mother has several boxes of designer shoes delivered every week and a family dinner could involve 50 dishes.
With this kind of norm, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to know that the boy she was looking after was a tad spoilt, once claiming that, “they should be nicer to him because he was a star now” after performing in a show, but Soraya said he was also good natured and the two of them got on well.

Next time Chinese tourists come to my country I will charge them more money. I am justified since Chinese people are rich now.

Well, even if the expressions such as "...Super, filthy, disgustingly rich..." and "... it shouldn’t surprise anyone to know that the boy she was looking after was a tad spoilt..." do not come directly from the lady, there should be some respect for the Family as it seems it had hosted her FOR A YEAR. Just looking at some of the comments above make me think of what validity the saying "Being rich is not a sin. Coveting what a rich man has is a sin" has at present.

Ah, the old "you're jealous if you criticize wealthy excesses" argument. The age old catchphrase. Almost as charming as: "if you don't like it here, then leave". Schoolchildren use the same catchphrase for anyone who criticizes the cool kids, giving them a free hand to abuse power, strength or beauty.

what a privilege, to be a witness to another family's wealth. i especially liked the part where the brat tries to make her (likely a jew or muslim) eat pork. lucky girl indeed.

Well, Deng Xiaoping did say that "To be rich is glorious!". It is obvious that most locals took his words literally.

I skimmed her article - I have no intention of actually reading such bloggy tripe properly - and the only thing which struck me was that she has developed an antipathy towards recruiters and employment agents as well. No surprise given that she also doesn't meet the published requirements for a work visa, but it is interesting that no matter where you go, recruiters seem to be to blame.

HAHAHA! Yes, a bimbo was wowed by some gov't family's glitter and glamour. Chinese see it as a win for them. Anyone with interests beyond gossip and fashion knows better.

Hard hitting reporting here. Some Chinese people are rich, as confirmed by foreigner. Get that on the front page right now. :D

That's not really fair to call her a bimbo. She was willing to take a chance at being an au pair in a foreign country to get some travel experience. That doesn't sound like a bimbo to me.

After reading her blog, I'll concede that she isn't a bimbo. It's just that the media summarized only the most superficial take-home message from her blog. The newsmedia is acting like a bimbo, here.
