Lamasery temple was built in 1694 to serve as the residence of Prince Yin Zhen, the fourth son of Emperor Kangxi. While the prince lived there, it was called “the Palace of Prince Yong.” After he ascended to the throne, it continued to be used by the imperial court and by the emperor himself for short periods. Later, it was used as residence for eunuchs and other imperial court members. In 1744, it was converted into a lamasery.
Yonghegong is the most renowned Tibetan Buddhist temple in China outside of Tibet and holds treasures of both the Han and Tibetan cultures. This magnificent temple consists of five main buildings lying on a north-south axis, with annexes on either side. The temple is protected by the Chinese Government as an important historical monument, and, though one of Beijing’s major tourist attractions, it continues to function as a Lama temple today.
