New army regulations have been issued meaning that soldiers who put on weight will miss out on promotions.
An expert with the National Defense University, Li Daguang, said that “being overweight will not only harm the soldiers’ image, but also affect their performance on the battlefield.”
He puts the increasing waistlines of soldiers down to improved living conditions, changing lifestyles and diets.
New standards have been set for soldiers’ weight, although the standards will vary for soldiers working in offices or administrative roles. The standards haven’t been disclosed to the public who frequently joke about the portly shapes of China’s generals.
